Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Context of Sentencing

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, many his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.
